Agricultural Advisory Board

Person County has an established Agricultural Advisory Board (AAB).  This board was originally established by the Person County Voluntary Agricultural District Ordinance on February 7, 2011 which was repealed on October 17, 2022 and replaced with the Person County Farmland Preservation Ordinance.  The AAB acts as the liaison between the agricultural community and the Board of Commissioners.  Some responsibilities of the AAB are:

  • Delegated authority to make decisions and execute agreements for the Voluntary/Enhanced Agricultural District programs
  • Study additional methods of protection for farming, horticulture, and forestry and make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners
  • Perform other agricultural, horticultural, and forestry-related tasks or duties assigned by the Board of Commissioners
  • Provide recommendations and input on modification to the Person County Farmland Preservation Plan
  • Provide guidance to County Departments on agricultural related issues

If you have an interest in serving on the Agricultural Advisory Board, please contact the Soil & Water Department for more information.

Farmland Preservation Ordinance

The purpose of this Ordinance is to reduce the loss of productive and existing farmland by promoting agricultural values and the general welfare of the county; increase identity and pride in the agricultural community and its way of life; encourage the economic and financial health of agriculture, horticulture, and forestry; decrease the likelihood of legal disputes, such as nuisance actions between farm owners and their neighbors; and encourage participation in voluntary programs.

Farmland Preservation Plan

The Person County Board of Commissioners adopted the Person County Farmland Preservation Plan (FPP) on June 6, 2016. By adopting this plan, Person County government has stated that Agriculture is important to the Person County economy.  This plan reflects the focus of the economic impact of agriculture in Person County and suggests ways to continue to grow the agricultural economy in the county.  The Person SWCD staff and Cooperative Extension staff will work with the Person County Agricultural Advisory Board on implementing the action items included in the FPP.
