The Person County Tax Administration Department consists of four divisions:

The Real Property Division appraises and assesses all real property in the county at its fair market value as of the effective date of the most recent reappraisal.

The Personal Property Division is responsible for the listing and auditing of personal property as well as sending out the annual tax bills and the monthly vehicle bills.

The Tax Collector's Division, as mandated by the North Carolina General Statutes, is responsible for collecting annual property tax bills on real estate, mobile homes, boats, business personal property, aircraft and other properties, in addition to any other fees or assessments as charged by the governing body. Also, the Collector's Office is responsible for the collection of taxes that are levied by all of the municipalities, fire districts, and special districts in Person County. These bills are mailed in July. The deadline for paying these taxes is January 5 of the next year. Beginning January 6th, these taxes are considered delinquent and accrue interest at a rate of 2% for the month of January, plus ¾% each month thereafter.

Delinquent taxes are subject to collection action as authorized by the North Carolina General Statutes. These actions may include garnishment of wages, attachment of bank accounts, Debt Setoff of delinquent tax bills from individual North Carolina tax returns and lottery winnings, levy (seizure) of personal property, and foreclosure of real estate.

Vehicle registration renewal fees and vehicle property tax are due at the same time. You will receive one bill in the mail about 60 days before your vehicle registration expires. Pay it all together online at http://www.ncdot.gov/dmv, by mail to North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, or in person at any DMV tag agency.

The Mapping/Land Records Division is responsible for reviewing parcel changes officially recorded with the Person County Register of Deeds office including new subdivisions, recombinations, property sales, road and right of way changes, and estate files. Other information includes parcel owner information, parcel dimensions, acreage, etc., which is used to update parcel maps. The Division ensures that this information is accurate and up-to-date and coordinates with the Person County GIS Department to update the County’s parcel maps on a regular basis.

Public parcel maps are displayed on the Person County Tax Parcel Viewer which provides other map information such as zoning, fire districts, addresses, utilities, watersheds and other related map information. Visit the Person County GIS Department’s website for more information about the Tax Parcel Viewer.
