The Food and Lodging Program is responsible for protecting public health by helping to ensure that all regulated establishments adhere to State laws and regulations that protect and promote public health. The Food and Lodging Program has four primary areas of responsibility; Plan review and permitting, inspections, education, and complaint investigation. In addition, Environmental Health Specialists participate in food borne outbreak investigations. 

 

North Carolina State Law requires regular quality inspections of the following establishments:

 

  • All food service establishments (restaurants, cafeterias, food stands, mobile food units, temporary food establishments)
  • Meat markets
  • Lodging facilities
  • Assisted living/ nursing homes and residential care homes
  • School buildings
  • Child care centers
  • Hospitals and jails
