Grow It In Person: Person County Seed Library

What is the Person County Public Library's Seed Library?

The Person County Public Library started a Seed Library in 2018. It is a collection of both purchased and donated seeds. We invite you to "check out" free seeds to grow in your own garden(s). Many of our varieties are traditional Southern Heirlooms, which are suited for local growing conditions and are part of our local history.

How do I check out seeds?

Simply find the seed packet(s) that you want from our seed library catalog and take them home with you. We can not guarantee the quantity or varieties available in our seed library. Seeds packet availability is based on donations made by our community and library users. We encourage all who take and grow seeds from our seed library to please save seeds at harvest time.

Do you take seed donations?

Yes! If you are a seed saver, we invite you to donate your seeds and help us preserve seed diversity. The Seed Library does not accept patented or GMO seeds. We primarily accept open-pollinated seeds but may accept hybrid seeds on a case-by-case basis. A donation form must be completed for each variety of seed being donated. Please visit the circulation desk or contact us by calling us at 336-597-7881 for more questions about donating seeds.

In Partnership with the Person County NC Cooperative, the Person County Public Library offers a how to save seeds program each year (typically in August). We invite all who are interested to attend.

Why Have a seed library?

Seed libraries are part of a movement to make open-pollinated seeds and seed saving techniques available to the public.

Gardens nourish the body, mind, and spirit. Communities are stronger when they have the resources and expertise to feed themselves and beautify their surroundings. Gardens also preserve history. Many seed varieties have been lost in the last century.

Questions?

For other questions about our seed library, please contact the Person County Public Library. You can also contact the Person County NC Cooperative Extension for other agricultural questions.
