Social Security’s Representative Payee Services encourages family or friends to serve as payees for individuals who cannot manage their own monthly benefits. When no family or friends are suitable for the task, the Department of Social Services has the option of taking on that role. While not a mandated program by the state of North Carolina, local departments often perform this role as they have the manpower. Social workers help individuals maintain food, shelter, utilities, clothing needs, and other necessities, as well as saving money for emergency situations. Workers encourage as much independence as possible and help the individual, when possible, to better manage their funds for themselves.
