MEDIA RELEASE

Input Sought for Future Use of Former Helena School Property

Person County acquired the former Helena School property from the Person County Schools in 2012.  Since that time, the County Commissioners have committed to a satellite Emergency Medical Services station as well as a satellite Sheriff’s Office on site.  These improvements are slated for occupation sometime in early 2014.  In addition, a Steering Committee was formed to create a vision and plan for the future use of the remainder of the site.  This Committee, consisting of local residents along with representatives from Person County Government, Piedmont Community College, and Person County Schools have been meeting regularly for several months.  They have brainstormed future uses and are now asking for the community’s thoughts on the future plans for this site.

A series of speaking engagements are planned from January 6th through February 15th to help shed some light on the efforts and considerations for the future use of the site.  If you are part of a community group that would be interested in hearing more about this project, please contact us.  The Committee has developed a survey tool, set to be released after the first of the year, which solicits input on possible uses and reuses of this space.  The survey is available in both paper and electronic form and can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X9MPBMF.  Paper versions are available at the Library and can be returned there or by emailing your completed survey to survey@personcounty.net. Survey responses are due back by February 15th

Finally, a public forum is planned on site for Saturday, January 25th at 11:00am.  This forum will discuss the options being considered and provide an additional opportunity for community input into the future plans of the property.  Tours of the buildings and grounds will also be offered.

Additional information about this exciting project can be found at www.personcounty.net. Questions and requests for additional information can be addressed to Heidi York, Person County Manager at hyork@personcounty.net or (336) 597-1720.
